MANCHESTER UNITED has issued a brief 57-word statement confirming the transfer of Mason Greenwood to Marseille.
The 22-year-old arrived in France last night and has signed a contract with the French club until 2029. The deal, valued at over £30 million, comes just before United announced the £52 million signing of Leny Yoro from Lille.
Marseille introduced Greenwood as their new player in a transfer announcement video. The forward will wear the No.10 jersey at his new club.
The transfer involves an initial fee of £27 million, plus £3.2 million in add-ons. Manchester United has also secured a 50 percent sell-on clause.
United’s statement on their website reads: “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United to join French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer. The 22-year-old forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since his debut in 2019. We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”
Greenwood, who joined United’s youth academy at age six, made his senior debut in 2019 and became a first-team regular. After a successful loan spell at Getafe last season, where he won the Player of the Year award, several European clubs showed interest in him.
He was informed this month that he no longer had a future at Manchester United and trained alone during pre-season. Despite opposition from many fans and Marseille mayor Benoit Payan, who has lobbied against the move, the club proceeded with the transfer.
Marseille’s new coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has expressed his support for Greenwood, stating, “When a player signs for the club, I consider him my child. Even if I can pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly.”
Greenwood may have the chance to return to his hometown soon, with a potential appearance for Marseille on August 3 against Sunderland at Bradford City’s Valley Parade.
