Marcel Sabitzer experienced an incident where he was struck by an object apparently thrown from the stands during Austria’s Euro 2024 match against Turkey in Leipzig.
During Austria’s attempt to secure a quarterfinal berth, Sabitzer was repeatedly targeted by several objects hurled from a section of Turkish supporters as he went over to take corner kicks. Earlier instances involved cups being thrown at him, with a smaller object hitting Sabitzer, causing him to fall on the pitch momentarily. Shortly after, several Turkey players came over to attend to the stricken Austria captain, before appealing to the crowd in an apparent effort to cease such actions.
The match saw a significant delay as numerous objects were cleared from the field during the second half of the Round of 16 encounter, which Turkey won 2-1 to set up a quarterfinal against the Netherlands.
Euro 2024 has been marked by incidents of crowd trouble, leading UEFA to issue fines exceeding €1 million for various infractions across the tournament.
