Argentina began their journey to defend their Copa America title with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over tournament newcomers Canada on Thursday.

While Canada showed impressive resilience against their decorated opponents, a dominant Argentina ultimately proved too strong.

The World Champions controlled the first half, creating numerous opportunities but facing a determined Canadian defense. Angel Di Maria and Alexis Mac Allister both came close to scoring, but Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau stood firm.

Canada nearly snatched a surprise lead just before halftime when Stephen Eustaquio’s header forced a diving save from Argentina’s Emi Martinez.

The deadlock finally broke in the second half thanks to a penalty. Mac Allister was brought down in the box by Crepeau, setting the stage for Julian Alvarez to convert his first Copa America goal from a tight angle.

Canada responded well after conceding, with substitute Jacob Shaffelburg nearly connecting with Larin, Millar, and David. However, their efforts lacked the finishing touch.

Lionel Messi, largely quiet throughout the match, came alive towards the end, seeking to add a second goal. Despite his best efforts, his magic touch eluded him.

However, Messi turned provider in the dying moments, setting up Lautaro Martinez to seal the victory and secure all three points for Argentina.
