Scott McTominay scored Scotland’s lone goal in their second Euro 2024 group-stage match against Switzerland.
After suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat on the opening day of the tournament, Steve Clarke’s team rebounded strongly to secure a crucial victory over Switzerland, the clear favorites.
McTominay found the net in the thirteenth minute, latching onto a cut-back pass inside the box and unleashing a powerful shot that deflected off Fabian Schar before going in.
Despite McTominay’s early strike, Xherdan Shaqiri equalized less than fifteen minutes later, leveling the score and denying Scotland the lead.
Both teams had opportunities to score thereafter, but solid defensive performances prevented further goals. Scotland showed more aggression towards the end but fell short of clinching the win.
Nevertheless, Scotland can draw positives from their performance and still have a chance to advance to the knockout stages if they defeat Hungary on Sunday and hope for a favorable result from the Germany-Switzerland match.
During the game, McTominay had two shots, one of which was on target and resulted in his goal. He made 43 touches and completed 14 out of 20 pass attempts, including two key passes.
Defensively, McTominay drew one foul, made three clearances, and registered one interception. He won one out of two aerial duels and two out of four contested aerial challenges.
McTominay did not attempt any dribbles or long balls but successfully connected with three out of five crosses aimed at his teammates.
Scotland will likely rely on McTominay’s influential presence to secure a victory against Hungary and keep their Euro 2024 hopes alive.
