Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes continued his impressive form as Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Czechia in their opening Euro 2024 match at the Red Bull Arena.
Czechia took the lead just after the hour mark with a powerful strike from Lukas Provod outside the box. Portugal equalized seven minutes later due to an own goal by Robin Hranac, and the match appeared destined for a draw until substitute Francisco Conceicao scored the winning goal from close range.
Fernandes played in his preferred advanced midfield role alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha. Full-backs Diogo Dalot and Joao Cancelo frequently pushed forward to support offеnsivе plays and build-up.
Fernandes was heavily involved with 112 touches, attempting 89 passes with an impressive 85% accuracy rate. He made two key passes and attempted eight crosses and four long balls, connecting successfully with three long balls but none of his crosses found their mark.
The 29-year-old created a significant chance for Cristiano Ronaldo, whose shot was denied by goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek. Fernandes had two shots blocked, won two out of six ground duels, and succeeded in two out of four aerial challenges. He also contributed with one tackle and interception.
His performance was another comprehensive and impressive display, setting the stage for Portugal’s next match against Turkiye as they look to build on their opening victory under coach Roberto Martinez.
