The Narrative Behind Boston Celtics Star Jayson Tatum’s Latest Coffee-Inspired Jordan Sneaker

Wearing his exclusive pair of Jordans, Jayson Tatum showcased his Tatum 2 during a match against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ranked among the NBA’s top 10 talents by several outlets, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics embodies stardom in every aspect. His star power led to a lucrative, multi-year endorsement deal with Air Jordan in the summer of 2019. It took some time for JT to release his first signature sneaker to the public, with the Tatum 1 becoming available in 2023.

The Celtics star’s second signature Jordan sneaker, the Tatum 2, is gaining attention, especially the “Momma’s Boy” variant released in February 2024. As a superstar, Tatum often receives one-of-a-kind editions of a sneaker, known as Player-Exclusive (PE). It was Tatum’s recent PE pair that he wore on April 9 against the Milwaukee Bucks that caught people’s attention.

Tatum’s coffee-themed pair of Tatum 2s were created by Ian Williams, founder of a sneaker-themed coffee shop called Deadstock Coffee in Portland, OR.

Tatum’s coffee-inspired PE pair of Tatum 2s generated buzz on social media. The shoes have a casual look for a pair of basketball sneakers, drawing inspiration from the Jordan 3 “Mocha” model. The collaboration between Deadstock Coffee and Air Jordan features JT’s signature logo on one tongue and the coffee brand’s logo on the other. Another trademark feature is an embroidered seal on the inside tab reading “4th and Couch,” the intersection where Deadstock Coffee is located in Portland.

Ian Williams, formerly a shoe developer at Nike, is no stranger to the sneaker world. Prior to his Deadstock Coffee venture, he helped create the Nike Dunk High SB “Wet Floor” colorway in 2009. With his love for sneakers combined with a passion for coffee, the Tatum 2 “Mocha” PE brings all the elements together.
