Manchester United Player Ratings: ‘Fantastic’ Teenager Shines with 8/10 Against Liverpool, While One Struggles with a 4

Man Utd faced Liverpool FC in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and this is how the player rated.

Manchester United held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw in a captivating clash at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The tone was set early on when Alejandro Garnacho saw a goal ruled out for offside after barely a minute and moments later Liverpool nearly took the lead themselves when Andre Onana saved well from Dominik Szoboszlai.

United were at their best on the counter-attack and it wasn’t long before Liverpool asserted their dominance on the encounter. They eventually took the lead when Luis Diaz fired in totally unmarked from a corner after a fine flick by Darwin Nunez. The only positive for United at the half-time whistle was that it remained just one, after a truly dreadful performance in which they offered little in midfield and found themselves with their backs against the wall.

A moment of magic was always going to be needed to drag United back into the game and it came shortly after the restart when Bruno Fernandes capitalised on a rare mistake from Jarrel Quansah and fired into an open goal from close to the halfway line. United’s goal sparked the game back into life and they almost took a shock lead when a low cross from Marcus Rashford caused chaos in the Liverpool box and was tipped away by Caoimhín Kelleher.

If the Fernandes goal was special, what followed was even better. With the match evenly poised, Kobbie Mainoo produced a stunner from the edge of the box to put United ahead and send Old Trafford into raptures. It wasn’t over yet though.

Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser and were gifted a way back into the game when Aaron Wan-Bissaka recklessly fouled Harvey Elliott in the box. Mohamed Salah made no mistake from the penalty spot as he sent Onana the wrong way. In the end a point was probably the fair result, but the spirited second-half performance did little to boost United’s faint hopes of Champions League qualification.

Here is how we rated the players in the match…

A huge save early on and some great build-up play from the back. Should have done better on the first goal but had little protection.

1. Andre Onana – 7

A huge save early on and some great build-up play from the back. Should have done better on the first goal but had little protection.

There was some decent defensive cover but his poor positioning let him down at times. Improved in the second-half and helped to take the ball forward on numerous occasions.

2. Diogo Dalot – 6

Another resilient display amid the chaos that ensued around him. A few fine passes from the back that started attacks out of nowhere.

3. Harry Maguire – 7

Another resilient display amid the chaos that ensued around him. A few fine passes from the back that started attacks out of nowhere

A fine performance against arguably the best attack in the Premier League. His inexperience was clear at times but he redeemed himself well with some no-nonsense defensive work.

4. Willy Kambwala – 8

A fine performance against arguably the best attack in the Premier League. His inexperience was clear at times but he redeemed himself well with some no-nonsense defensive work.

Has to be blamed for the opening goal of the match. Made a few important blocks but was always destined to struggle against Mohamed Salah. A reckless challenge to concede the penalty.

5. Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5

Looked off the pace again. Seemed to spend more time running back towards his own goal than moving forward and offered very little protection. Conceded a silly free-kick at the death that could have proved costly.

6. Casemiro – 4

Produced a stunner to put United ahead. He had looked a little tired before the goal but took his chance in style. A world-class talent.

7. Kobbie Mainoo – 7

Some sloppy moments in the final third and frustrating decision-making that left you wanting to tear your heart out. Then he took his moment to drag United back into the game.

8. Bruno Fernandes – 7

He was electric in attack but faded as the game went on. Took his early strike really well, only for the offside flag to rule it out.

9. Alejandro Garnacho – 7

It was a big call to start him ahead of Antony and it didn't pay off. Hardly had a sniff before he was taken off with an injury.

10. Marcus Rashford – 5

It was a big call to start him ahead of Antony and it didn’t pay off. Hardly had a sniff before he was taken off with an injury.

Another match where he had little service but more should be expected of him as well. Looks a little lost since his return from injury.

11. Rasmus Hojlund – 6

Another match where he had little service but more should be expected of him as well. Looks a little lost since his return from injury.

Wasn't able to continue where he left off in midweek but brought added energy and tenacity to the United attack at a valuable time.

12. Antony – 6

Wasn’t able to continue where he left off in midweek but brought added energy and tenacity to the United attack at a valuable time.

Was brought on to bring composure but contributed to chaos instead. Mainoo is streets ahead of him.

13. Sofyan Amrabat – 5

Another decent cameo from the bench. Added some much-needed energy to the United midfield. A good tactical foul to end a bright Liverpool break.

14. Mason Mount – 6
