Inter Miami and New York Red Bulls sought to роꜱtpone their MLS fixture, but their request was turned down

Star athlete Lionel Messi continues to be out of action due to a muscle ιnjᴜry he suffered in a CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal match against Nashville. Furthermore, Miami will be missing as many as eight other possible starters due to different fitness concerns and the ongoing FIFA international break.

The circumstances aren’t any more favorable for the Red Bulls, with captain Emil Forsberg and four other crucial players currently away on international duty. Despite both clubs agreeing to delay the game, the federation’s choice to proceed with the match presents obstacles for both teams.

Martino expressed his disappointment, highlighting the need for the league to reevaluate its stance on playing fixtures during FIFA breaks.

“We received a request from Red Bulls to postpone this match and we agreed, but the federation didn’t approve,” the Inter manager said.

“It’s something that will have to be considered, the league will have to continue assessing [playing though FIFA breaks].”

The revival of the Leagues Cup last year adds another layer of complexity for the US Soccer Federation. This tournament spans four weeks during the middle of the season, making it difficult to postpone fixtures. Martino can take comfort in having veteran players like Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba available, as they offer valuable experience and depth to the team. Nonetheless, with MLS facing ongoing challenges related to scheduling conflicts and player absences, demands for a more adaptable approach during international breaks are expected to grow stronger.
