New Inter Miami recruit Federico Redondo has explained how Lionel Messi influenced his move to MLS, calling it ‘a dream’ to play alongside him

The Argentine U23 international finalized his move to the club in southern Florida just last month, marking another reunion with fellow Argentines Messi and Tata Martino, who took over as the coach last season. Redondo naturally praised the Albiceleste icon as the “greatest player in history” and acknowledged that Messi’s presence in Miami played a role in influencing his decision to join MLS.

Speaking at his first press conference as a Miami player, where he was also presented with the No.55 shirt, Redondo told reporters: “It’s a team full of stars and a very ambitious club that is looking to win titles and compete at the top, which caught my attention [for the move]. Obviously, Messi being at this club played a big part in my decision. He is the best player in history and to be able to share the pitch with him is a dream. In terms of my position, [I will play] where they need me. At Argentinos [Juniors, his former club] I played both as the ‘five’ [holding midfielder], inside right, inside left. I feel comfortable in all those positions that I think I can play [well].”

Redondo, the son of the legendary Fernando, gained eligibility for selection on Monday after obtaining his visa approval. He is set to fill in for his compatriot Facundo Farias, who is unfortunately out for the season due to an ACL ιnjᴜry. Regarding encounters with fellow Argentinians in Miami, Redondo shared that he has met Messi before, recounting,  “I’ve been with Messi before, I’ve trained with Argentina’s senior team and I was able to take a photo with him. I’ve been watching him forever, but I don’t remember the first time.”

Having received the green light to play, the 21-year-old midfielder is now in contention for selection by Martino in the upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup clasҺ against Nashville on Thursday. Miami secured a spot in the last-16 of the tournament, propelled by a Leagues Cup victory last season, inspired by Messi.
