According to the Athletic, the Hammers have reached an agreement with City to sign Phillips on a short-term contract for the duration of the season. The England international has made only 31 appearances since joining the club from Leeds in 2022 for a sum of £45 million ($57 million), and personal terms are not thought to be an issue, with the Irons paying his entire salary.
City have been in Abu Dhabi for a warm-weather training camp ahead of their FA Cup encounter with Tottenham on Friday, and Phillips will return to England with the squad. Juventus has been looking into a deal to sign the midfielder but has yet to reach an agreement with City.
During his time with Leeds, Phillips established himself as one of the top holding midfielders in the country, earning 31 caps for England and appearing in every game as they advanced to the European Championship final in 2021. He played six minutes in the Three Lions’ last match against North Macedonia, demonstrating Gareth Southgate’s belief in his abilities.
Phillips will want to return to regular play at the London Stadium as he looks to make England’s Euro 2024 squad after the season.
